    Design Lead

    We are seeking an innovative Design Lead who is a hybrid with both UX and UI experience to support the advancement of The Penny Hoarder overall design approach and voice. Experience with mobile, site architecture, responsive web design, interaction design and the ability to influence stakeholders with data-driven experiences will make you a strong candidate. A background in branding, editorial and social will help us build a loyal and engaged audience. 

    This position will play a key role across the company, working closely with marketing, brand strategy and editorial to be a part of developing and amplifying The Penny Hoarder brand. In addition to leading design for the site and major projects, you’ll manage a team of freelance designers creating social graphics.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Design user-centric website experiences in collaboration with our development team
    • Create engaging, innovative graphics for our social media channels
    • Manage and edit freelance designers on web and graphic requests, providing clear art direction and ideas to ensure high-quality deliverables and brand consistency
    • Collaborate with our advertising team to design branded email, social, newsletter and website pages for our partners
    • Collaboratively build a vision for company branding that helps us deepen our relationships with our audience, industry peers and advertisers
    • Provide creative design and authority to elevate our brand and strengthen our visual presence, executing designs that are based on brand strategy & insights and communicate our company’s values
    • Design fresh and creative responsive concepts for The Penny Hoarder website, including new experiences and re-imagining those that already exist, with an eye toward increasing community engagement
    • Bring a mobile-first, UX-focused approach to design, proactively identifying ways to reduce friction for users, using both low and high fidelity wireframes and prototypes
    • Work with our development team to extend and optimize web functionality, user interface and navigation that works with various breakpoints and devices, including providing feedback during development to ensure interactions work as designed
    • Provide a cohesive vision for graphics across all platforms, including Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook and email
    • Maintain wireframes and prototypes for key user flows, interactions and design specifications as required throughout the design and testing life-cycle
    • Serve as a change agent, suggesting new ways of presenting our stories and brand
    • Manage creative resources across departments and communicate project status, timelines, deliverables, goals, and expectations to internal teams and other departments on a regular basis
    • Learn client and audience needs through the use of analytics and be an active part of the creative process by participating in brainstorming meetings

    Technical Skills and Qualifications

    • Exceptional creativity, with a portfolio of sophisticated, intuitive and strong design work
    • 7 years experience creating digital designs and rapidly delivering and iterating on products, including presenting solutions to design challenges
    • Developing intuitive and engaging user experiences on mobile devices, bringing a UX-focused approach to work, with a strong understanding of web best practices and typography for the web
    • Understanding of analytics and how they can play a role in data-driven design
    • Expert-level experience with Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop
    • Experience working in an agile environment
    • Familiarity with front-end technologies and bootstrap frameworks, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript/jQuery, so they can keep our development team top of mind and make decisions throughout the creative process that make their work easier 
    • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-moving environment, including adapting in the face of unexpected challenges
    • A calm, humble demeanor and positive attitude that inspires trust, confidence and collaboration
    • Able to accept constructive feedback and implement changes that improve user experience

    • Illustration skills to expand our visual storytelling for our journalistic content
    • Active approach to continual learning and inspiration;staying on top of industry trends and innovations and integrating them into creative work
